Footballers turn a great day into one that was just rubbish

A GOOD day turned into a rubbish one for young footballers from Ledbury as they followed up a resounding win by getting their hands dirty to help clean up the town.

After watching his young charges complete a resounding 18-1 win in their latest fixture, Ledbury Swifts Rovers Under 11s coach Chris Fleck led the players on a litter pick around the town trail.

Mr Fleck said the idea came after reading an article published in the Ledbury Reporter last month about increased litter along the trail.

Using equipment loaned by Ledbury’s Helping Hand Company, they gathered up 15 bags full of rubbish.

“The club enjoys a lot of sponsorship and donations from the Ledbury Community, and we thought a communityspirited venture would be a nice way to show our appreciation,”

he said. “The boys seem to enjoy seeing who could find the most unusual type of litter.

“Wheel trims, pairs of trainers and baby dummies were just some of the more unusual items, but the most common items were disregarded drinks containers and food wrappers.”

2012 is Ledbury Swifts FC’s 25th anniversary year and a gala dinner is being planned for September.

Well done to Ledbury Swifts, but it is a shame that the local authority, who we pay our council tax to, cannot keep the towns tidy, perhaps a suggestion of diverting some of the £90 Mil they are planning to spend on ESG to increase the staff would be considered.
