Rory to take on onion challenge

THIS year’s onion eating competition at the Newent Onion Fayre will attract a few famous faces, as well as the usual line-up of determined chompers, tomorrow.

Rory McGrath and Will Mellor will be attending the event as part of their Channel 5 programme Rory and Will Champions of the World.

Rory McGrath has appeared in They Think it’s all Over, Three Men in a Boat and Grumpy Old Men, while Will Mellor is best known as Gaz in Two Packets of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

But if the tourists are looking to walk away as champion onion munchers, they will face stiff opposition from the locally-grown talent.

The onion eating takes place at 1pm on the main stage and will see each man chomping his way through a 7oz onion, while women will each tackle a 5oz onion.

Newent Onion Fayre is Gloucestershire’s largest one-day event and attracts about 15,000 people to the town.

Another highlight this year will be an English Civil War re-enactment as well as other events from the period.
