School tablet is restored

A DISTINGUISHED former pupil of Hanley Castle High School returned to the school to unveil a restored stone tablet from the 18th century.

The tablet, bearing a Latin inscription, was originally put up in 1733 to mark restoration work at the school, but over the centuries it had become weathered and faded and was neglected.

Now it has been restored thanks to generous donations from Sir Nick Lechmere, whose ancestors are mentioned on the plaque, and the Old Hancastrians Association, led by David Street.

The work was carried out by Steve Allard and Sons from Callow End.

Unveiling it was renowned architect and designer Professor Nigel Coates, of the Royal College of Arts in London.
