Vulcan bomber seen over Herefordshire
9:30am Sunday 7th October 2012 in News
A VULCAN bomber took to the skies over Herefordshire to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
The Avro Vulcan XH558 flew over the county on Saturday and was the cause of much curiosity.
The plane was flying close to the homes of those who have helped in its development over the years, and flew over a memorial service in Ross-on-Wye along its route, which started out at Doncaster.
John Turner, from Bartestree, was working in his garden at about 3pm when he saw the plane fly overhead.
He said: “I heard a low rumble overhead, like some enormous elephant, and I looked up and was so lucky to see this huge plane flying by.
“It was so impressive. I really enjoyed watching it.”
The Avro Vulcan XH558 is the only airworthy example of the 134 Avro Vulcan V bombers that were operated by the Royal Air Force from 1953 until 1984.
