Injury units in Ross-on-Wye and Leominster have opening hours cut

MINOR injury units in Ross-on-Wye and Leominster are to have their opening hours cut.

Wye Valley NHS Trust says the move will help strengthen Hereford County Hospital’s accident and emergency department.

A recent MIU review found that members of staff at the units - which will now only open 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday - have to leave wards and work alone or in pairs when treating patients during the night, putting them at risk.

“For the vast majority of the 8,000 visits we can expect at the two MIUs this year it will be ‘business as normal’,” said Peter Wilson, medical director at Wye Valley NHS Trust.

Ross unit currently sees an average of 24 people each month, while just a dozen people visit the Leominster unit in that time.

MIU’s usually treat sprains, strains and broken bones as well as minor burns, scalds and insect bites.

Signs alerting people to the changes have been placed at both sites.

fordshire77, No he wont be taking a pay cut my friend. They never do.
Tell you what the media ought to do. Make a short film involving Mr Wilson. Take a wooden Mallet, hit him across the kneecap, just enough for him to sustain a 'minor injury' and film him navigating the system during these times of closure and then, if all goes well and he makes a full recovery we can all say, well done Mr Wilson. What an excellent idea.
My warmest regards.

In a rural area that Ross Hospital covers I would have thought this was an essential service, 24 cases in a month, surely that number makes it worthwhile having a staff member on call from the wards, then we are told it could be dangerous for staff, there are cameras focused on the doors which are locked at night, Staff could press a panic button etc we are told the police can be there in a very short time.
Conservative Government, Conservative Council, Remember THE NHS is SAFE in our HANDS!!!! the usual pre-election b******t
