SNACK giant Tyrrells has been given permission to produce more popcorn and build an 80ft chimney at its base at Stretford, near Leominster.

Tyrrells said the move could create half a dozen jobs in the short-term and add to its already successful crisp enterprise.

But odour and traffic worries dominated discussions at Herefordshire Council's planning meeting yesterday (Wednesday) as residents voiced concern at the smell popcorn production, which is already underway on site, produces.

Ward member councillor Mark Cooper said he was fully supportive of Tyrrells, but added “this has gone beyond a farm diversification project”.

Tyrrells operations director Richard Worrall said the smell could not be picked up more than a short distance from the production building and the chimney would reduce the impact.

Councillor voted to approve both the chimney and popcorn production.
