SHAKESPEARE 2012 is a campaign for a national celebration of Shakespeare and this year as a warm-up to this celebration there are plans for fun events all over the country to mark the bard’s birthday.
Organisers want people to join in to bring Shakespeare to as many people as possible by organising their own events, from quizzes and sonnet readings to performing complete plays, on Saturday April 24 Bromyard Poetry Society is organising a write a sonnet event, the Conquest Youth Theatre are hosting a Saturday morning informal bard-themed event and in Worcester actor Ben Humphrey is organising a 24-hour Shakespeare marathon with readings by professional and amateur performers.
There are also plans to have a company of Shakespeare actors ‘stranded’ in Bromyard on April 23 and 24 who will have to perform to earn their keep.
Chris Barltrop, who is in touch with actor Ian Flintoff, the driving force behind Shakespeare 2012, is keen to put people who want to organise a Shakespeare event themselves in touch with the organisers.
Ideas for events include Shakespeare quizes, Shakespeare stories for children and adults, readings of sonnets, favourite pieces, or even a play.
Shakespeare 2012 suggests people use their imagination when it comes to finding a venue for their Shakespeare’s birthday event this April and consider everything from local theatres and village halls to street corners, shopping arcades, beaches, even the local pub.
