THE end could be in sight for the nuisance and damage caused by heavy lorries in Bromyard’s town centre.

Plans are being drawn up to solve the problem and direct traffic more efficiently with improved signage following a private meeting between Bromyard and Winslow Town Council and Herefordshire Council’s contractors Amey on Thursday, March 3.

The problem is caused by heavy lorries and long vehicles following sat-navs from the A44 by-pass to get to the Porthouse industrial esate via Pump Street, New Road and even Rowberry Street and Church Street.

Coun Alan Seldon said: “We have got some agreement that there’s a problem with signage and problems with heavy vehicles coming down Pump Street and New Road. At last we have an agreed route to get the vehicles off the A44 and to the industrial estate. It’s a big step forward as we have never had this from the council before. Now it’s a case of getting the signage right so that it is followed. It’s moving in the right direction and quite quickly.”

The proposed routes direct traffic from Worcester and Hereford down Sherford Street and Church Street, while traffic from Leominster would be sent down Old Road and Tenbury Road.

The next meeting is due to take place on Friday, April 1, when Amey will inform the town council of the cost of the final proposals.
