WORCESTER company Magic Whiteboard, which shot to fame after an appearance by owners Neil and Laura Westwood on TV's Dragons' Den in 2008, is launching a campaign to help schools improve literacy and numeracy throughout the UK.
It is planning to give four million school children a free reusable notebook. That's one for every primary school child.
The campaign will be kicked off by giving away 30,000 whiteboard notebooks to primary schools on a "first come first served" basis. Books will be sent in September.
The scheme is being partly funded by local businesses sponsoring the notebooks. Participating firms will have their company logo and school friendly company information on the rear cover. Business mogul Theo Paphitis, one of the Dragons who invested in the Westwood's idea, said: "Free reusable notebooks for schools makes it easy for businesses to contribute resources for their local school and it is good for their corporate social responsibility."
Neil Westwood added: "We are doing this because we want more businesses to get more involved with their local schools. Businesses can help provide jobs, work experience and explain to children and teachers the skills employers and looking for in new employees. It creates a win win situation. We will print and distribute all the reusable notebooks, which are made in Worcester. The more local businesses that register the more free reusable notebooks schools get."
