WITH trowels in hand, Heart of Worcestershire College’s construction students headed off to Spectrum Days, Droitwich, to help in the renovation of one of its sensory rooms The Trove.

Spectrum Days is a small non-for-profit charity providing specialist services for people with profound disabilities across Worcestershire and the surrounding areas. It provides person centred care plans tailored to each individual, giving families support throughout the week at the centre, in the community and at home. The three day project gave HoW College students a chance to gain valuable work experience and get involved in a worthwhile community project.

Construction student Ryan Wilson said: “Working with the people at Spectrum Days has been an amazing experience. It has given me a chance to get some real world experience and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I hope what we have done has made a real difference to someone’s life.”

Curriculum, resources & quality leader, Rob Smith, added: “It has been a pleasure working with and getting to know the people at Spectrum Days. The students have worked really hard and have found their time at the centre really rewarding. We look forward to working with them in the future.”

Maggie Allen, Spectrum Days trustee explained: "This kind of support from the community has immense value to our small but important charity. Financially, it has saved the charity hundreds of pounds (the cost of paying a plasterer), raised public awareness of this level of disability and engaged with these young people and their lecturers to increase our public profile. We are grateful for this opportunity to thank the lecturers and the students for all their endeavours on our behalf.”
