A COLWALL school was the venue as a collection of work by an influential English artist went on display for the first time in 20 years.

Paintings by Maurice Feild were on display at The Downs Malvern College Prep School last week after being discovered in a cupboard at the school by new head Alastair Cook. Feild was an art teacher at the school from 1928-54 and later at the Slade School of Art. As news of the exhibition spread a host of other Feild paintings were soon offered up for inclusion, with many coming from members of the Old Downians Society and a number being loaned by Jim Hoyland, whose father originally employed Feild at the school. Former pupils also contributed a number of letters and reminiscences for the exhibition.

Mr Cook said: “I only hope the exhibition rekindles interest in his remarkable legacy to British art, as he deserves.”
