Gritting update:

Worcestershire County Council's gritting teams are again helping to keep the county's highways moving as they head out this afternoon, this evening and overnight.

The fleet of 31 gritters have been treating secondary routes since 1.30pm today and will head out on primary routes from 6pm.

Winter service inspections will take place in the early hours of tomorrow morning  to assess the weather and road conditions throughout Worcestershire.

Latest MET Office forecasts suggest that snow showers will continue to hit areas of the region for the remainder of today.

The last of the snow is predicted to fizzle out this evening, followed by a dry and cold night with a hard frost persisting until at least midnight on Friday.

Gritting teams have also been out and about refilling grit bins across the county as fast as they can.

To help residents pinpoint their nearest grit bin an interactive map is available at worcestershire.gov.uk/gritting, which allows users to search by postcode.

Jon Fraser, county council highways customer and community manager, said: "Our gritters and snow ploughs are continuing to treat designated routes around the clock, although drivers are still urged to take care on the road.

As we've now had five days of continual snow or icy conditions, it's easy for drivers to start to switch off from the continual dangers that ice and snow present on the roads. Please remember to slow down and leave extra space between yourself and the vehicle in front to allow for extra stopping time in icy conditions.

"Gritting is very effective, but it is not a miracle solution, and I urge all drivers to temper their driving according to the conditions."

The latest information on schools closures, along with any disruption to public transport and services, will be available on the county council's website worcestershire.gov.uk.

The latest information on bin collections from Wychavon District Council:

The refuse and recycling crews are currently collecting as normal.

We apologise that, due to the weather, some householders will have missed a collection, either refuse or recycling.  Householders who have missed a collection need to store the missed waste for two weeks.  The missed refuse or recycling will be collected on their next scheduled refuse or recycling collection date.

Clear sacks are available from our contact centres for any additional recycling.

Food waste is collected weekly in the kitchen waste bin.  Any excess food waste should be bagged up and placed in your refuse bin.

If you have any questions please call 01386 565018.

National round-up

Fresh snow has fallen across many parts of the UK overnight, continuing a week of disruption to schools, airports and traffic networks.

Up to 9cm (3.5in) has already fallen in some of the worst affected areas, including southern England, south-west England, the West Midlands and Wales.

Northern Scotland and northern England also had a further dumping of around 2cm (0.8in).

The snow is expected to ease throughout the day when it will become confined to south Wales and south-west England.

The severe weather has already caused havoc up and down the country this week with hundreds of schools closed, dozens of flights cancelled and many train networks disrupted.

Have you had enough of the snow yet?

Forecasters are predicting there could be another "major snow event" on Friday, with up to 10cms possible in some areas.

Nick Prebble, a forecaster for MeteoGroup, said: "There will more disruption to come today no doubt with reports that up to 9cms have already fallen in Hampshire and around seven in the Midlands, Hereford, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

"The snow will ease through the day for most areas, but with a further 3cms expected later in the day for south Wales and parts of south-west England.

"While tomorrow is expected to be mainly dry, we are predicting a major snow event again on Friday with up to 10cms (3.9in) possible in some areas."

He added, however, that the weekend and next week should be much milder, without the risk of snow.
