A MULTI-million dollar film production based on a novel by local author David Mitchell reached the UK's cinemas last Friday.

Cloud Atlas was nominated for the Booker prize when it was published in 2004, and has now been brought to the silver screen.

The film has a stellar cast including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon and Jim Broadbent.

It is reported to have cost £100m to make.

It tells six stories from the 19th Century to a postapocalyptic future.

Mitchell, aged 43, grew up in Hanley Swan, Upton and Malvern, and went to Hanley Castle High School.
