Celebrities who got to know our onion

MINGLING WITH THE STARS: Newent Onion Fayre’s OnionEd with Chris Evans, Alex Jones and Seasick Steve,
RADIO and TV presenter Chris Evans was among those who got to know their onions when representatives from an annual fair took their message down south.
Newent Onion Fayre’s new mascot, OnionEd, was among those in attendance when officials from the event were invited to host a stand in the Best of British section at the CarFest event, Hampshire, last weekend.
And as thousands made their way around the displays, many left with an onion-tinged odour – as well as finding out about some award-winning leeks, garlic and chives, kindly lent to the committee by local grower Chris Comer.
Many also took part in an ‘onion eater’ challenge, which saw people trying to eat an entire raw onion.
However, although asked, former Don’t Forget your Toothbrush host Mr Evans was not brave enough to take up the challenge – but he did have a hug from OnionEd.
Charlotte Offord, marketing and publicity co-ordiantor for the fair, said: “The festival was a fantastic way to not only promote Newent Onion Fayre, but also to promote Newent itself.
“The fair is a fantastic day out and a great opportunity to showcase the town to visitors. It’s doing a great job of putting Newent on the map.”
Mr Evans, who founded the CarFest event last year, was not the only celebrity who got to grips with OnionEd, with Alex Jones from BBC’s The One Show, musician Seasick Steve and Children In Need’s famous mascot Pudsey among those to meet the onion fayre icon.
Alongside the food at this year’s event, which takes place on Saturday, September 14, and is hosted in association with main sponsors GSM and Severn Cider, live music from the Roving Crows, Southgate and Leigh and the Twerzels will also be among the attractions on offer.
