Ideas are needed for next year’s carnival
10:00am Sunday 6th October 2013 in Ledbury
LEDBURY Carnival celebrates its 40th anniversary next year but organisers need your help to come up with a theme.
The challenge was discussed last week at the carnival open meeting where it was agreed the 2013 spectacular, which had the theme, The West End Comes to Ledbury, was a big success.
The event attracted about 8,000 people to the town centre.
But carnival committee chairman Steve Clegg said the meeting could not come up with a suitable theme for next year.
One idea is a wartime theme, with the name Roaring 40s, but there are likely to be other suggestions on the table.
Mr Clegg said: “We are looking for something extra special – yes indeed.”
The 2013 Carnival was also a great success financially.
Mr Clegg said: “The procession was colourful, the music was lively and the sun shone – and the bucket collection was £2,300.”
The bucket collectors, usually in costume, follow the floats for the length of the carnival procession route and encourage onlookers to give generously.
Proceeds go towards the cost of staging next year’s carnival.
One change in 2014 will be for the judging of the floats and procession entries.
Mr Clegg said there is likely to be a fixed time for the arrival of the judges and, for the first time, they will be marked out as judges, perhaps through the use of sashes.
Any suggestions for the carnival theme are welcome before the annual meeting, which will take place on Monday, November 11, at 8pm in the town council offices, Church Lane. The committee is also keen for ideas for entertainment, stalls and bands for the 2014 anniversary carnival.
New faces will always been made welcome, to help the committee plan next year’s event.
