POLICE are reminding residents to keep presents out of sight as the number of burglaries tends to rise at this time of year.

In the last seven days there have been ten domestic burglaries in Herefordshire- compared to seven during the same period last year.

In the last 28 days there have been 37 compared to 25 last year.

Detective chief inspector Paul Judge said: "While presents under the tree may look pretty, you are not the only person they may appeal to. Burglars have been known to break in and steal wrapped gifts from under the tree.

"I know it’s not very Christmassy, but I would urge people to keep their presents out of sight until Christmas morning."

Officers also offer the following advice:

  • If you are going out in the evening leave some lights and a radio on to make it look as if someone is home. If you are going away for a few days use a timer.
  • As at any other time of the year, make sure all your doors and windows are secure, even when you are at home.
  • Before wrapping expensive Christmas presents write down the model and serial number.
  • You can register your new presents at www.immobilise.com. If you are unfortunate enough to be burgled and your items are recovered they can be returned. This will also help secure a prosecution because officer will be able to prove it is stolen.

If you have any information that can help police catch a burglar, report it on 101. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to the independent charity Crimestoppers by going to www.crimestoppers-uk.org or calling 0800 555 111.
