THERE is one thing that can be guaranteed at an Oddsocks production - you'll laugh your socks off.

Apart from that, anything goes.

But that's the beauty of it.

The touring theatre company took its performance of Much Ado About Nothing to the Bishop of Hereford's Bluecoat School last night and, the school field under the summer sun, was the perfect place for the subsequent two hours of revelry.

Shakespeare's comedic play tells the story of soldiers Benedick and Claudio who return to Messina on leave with friend, Prince Don Pedro.

Benedick is tricked into falling for his old flame Beatrice and Claudio gets engaged to his young love Hero.

But the happy-go-lucky mood is broken as the prince’s illegitimate brother, Don John, schemes to frame Hero as a cheat.

She's shamed at her own wedding and, with both Claudio and her dad Leonato turning their backs on her, falls terribly unwell - presumed dead.

But the scheme is discovered when the local watch apprehend Don John's henchman Borachio and his ally Conrade.

Beatrice challenges Benedick to show his love for her because she’s Holding out for a Hero to challenge Claudio to a fight to the death.

Claudio, meanwhile is shocked and saddened at the supposed death of his ex and he will never see her again. The scene is set for a dramatic and hilarious conclusion as the true villains are confronted, the deception is revealed and the lovers are reunited.

Villains come complete with strong cockney accents and an authentic drunken swag and there’s a hilarious ‘torture’ scene to add to the mix.

There’s music from every era – including Mr Brightside, War, Tainted Love – and the quick-witted Oddsocks actors seem like they’re genuinely having an absolute ball.

In this production, missing props and external factors (the helicopter that delivered Don Pedro kept re-appearing) just added to the fun.

And as ever, there was plenty of audience participation with the accomplished troupe of players quickly establishing a rapport with those enjoying the spectacle.

A hilarious evening of entertainment from a highly talented group of actors.
