The county's one-off Whitney toll bridge over the Wye is up for sale.

Current owners Grahame Penny and Maggie made headlines when they bought the bridge on its uppers.

Three years later they say it's ready for a new owner to go the extra mile.

Together they've put the landmark on the market for £850,000.

Whitney-on-Wye Toll Bridge is the only one of its kind in the county and one of just eight privately owned toll bridges in the UK.

The bridge has had its share of the spotlight over last few years, featuring on The One Show, Secret Britain and Tim Wonnacott’s Antiques Roadtrip.

“We bought a business which needed help and diversification as it was struggling and its days were numbered without drastic work and investment," said Maggie Taylor. “We saw what could be done and did it and three and a half years later it’s in a position for someone with energy to take it on, maintain the growth," she said.

Grahame and Maggie pitch themselves as custodians of an ancient monument rather than owners and have concentrated their efforts on the land around the bridge to create year-round income support include fishing, canoeing, camping and café facilities.

The site comes with planning consent for a new toll manager's house.

“We have now reached the stage where we have done all the hard graft developing the business and are ready to hand over to a new owner to maintain it. We are ready for a well-earned holiday," said Maggie.

Agents Colliers International say "keen interest" is expected in the sale.
