AN RAF war hero will take part in a special service in Hereford to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Brian Davies, 93, who holds one of the highest flying honours, the Distinguished Flying Cross, (DFC), will lay a wreath at the War Memorial in the city following the service at St Peters Church.

Mr. Davies, a senior member of the Hereford and Marches Aircrew Association, was awarded the DFC in 1945 flying Halifax bombers on 10 Squadron and for attacking heavily defended enemy targets with skill and determination.

A former Chaplain Chief of the RAF, the Venerable Robin Turner, will give an address at the service while music will be performed by an RAF orchestra and choral support from the Academia Musica of Hereford Sixth Form College.

The service on September 13 has been organised by a group of RAF veterans supported by a grant from the City Council and the Bulmer Becket Foundation.

Those attending the special service will include Herefordshire’s Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Darnley, the Chairman of Herefordshire Council, Councillor Brian Wilcox, the Mayor of Hereford, Councillor Charles Nicholls and other civic dignitaries.

After wreath laying at the War Memorial in St Peter’s Square the commemoration ends with a march-past led by the Standard Bearers of the Royal British Legion, members of the Air Training Corps Squadrons in Herefordshire and the RAF Section of the CCF at the Hereford Cathedral School. The salute will be taken by Lady Darnley.

Wing Commander Ron Mudge, the Secretary of the Hereford and Marches Aircrew Association said: “ We are very proud to remember the sacrifice of the men and women of the RAF who in the air and on the ground won the victory which saved Britain from invasion in 1940”

The service starts at 3pm and those wishing to attend are asked to be seated by 2.45pm
