A 34 year old Newent man accused of threatening another man with a hypodermic has now also been charged with a burglary, Gloucester crown court was told today.

Matthew Goodchild of Lightfoot, Newent, is alleged to have made the syringe threat to Owen Chandler on a footpath near Newent Lake on 27th November last year.

When he appeared before the court today Janine Woods, prosecuting, said Goodchild had appeared before magistrates yesterday on a new charge of burglary and it had committed to the crown court for trial.

The paperwork had not arrived in time for that charge to be progressed today, she said.

Defence solicitor John Lynch had indicated Goodchild would be pleading not guilty to both charges and it was hoped they could be tried together by a jury, she added.

Recorder Richard Smith QC adjourned the case until 11th March so that all the paperwork can be prepared. He remanded Goodchild in custody till then.
