A FORMER policeman from Weobley was joined by almost 50 people from his local community for a charity walk in memory of his wife.

Morgan Baynham, 69, organised the walk to raise money for the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) which treated his wife, Elizabeth, as she battled acute myeloid leukaemia.

She sadly died aged 64 in November 2014.

Mr Baynham was joined by family, friends and members of the community as they took on the six-mile walk which weaved through the picturesque village and into the surrounding countryside.

It is a place close to his heart as it was there that his wife grew up, went to school, was married and is now laid to rest.

Mr Baynham said: “The walk was a small way of thanking staff at the BHOC for the amazing care and treatment that they gave my dear Elizabeth when she was diagnosed with leukaemia.

“The staff on ward 62 and the day centre became like family to us.

“They are very special people who provided tremendous support at a time when our world was at rock bottom. We are indebted to them and the walk donations will mean other patients, and their families, can be helped in the same way through a very difficult time.”

A tea party was also laid on at Hopelands village hall with tea and cake ready for all of those who took part.

The efforts of all the Weobley walkers has so far raised £1,000 for Above and Beyond -the charity for Bristol's city centre hospitals - in addition to the hundreds of pounds Mr Baynham and friends have fundraised through tea parties and concerts with his local choir, The Stokes Singers.
