WORK to replace gas mains will start this Saturday resulting in temporary traffic lights on Belmont Road in Hereford.

National Grid is replacing old metal mains with modern plastic pipe on the A465 Belmont Road at the junction with Walnut Tree Avenue.

The work is expected to take six weeks and during this time drivers will not be able to turn off Belmont Road into Walnut Tree Avenue or Hunderton Road.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time for any additional congestion or find an alternative route.

Steve Murray, National Grid’s head of network, said: “There is never a good time to dig up the roads especially on busy routes and I realise this work is likely to cause some disruption.

"But, I ask residents, businesses and motorists to bear with us while we carry out this essential work which is needed to make sure the area will continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”

During the work, residents and traders wanting more information can call the customer helpline on 0114 232 8095.

Summer holidays started on July 21 for children in the county.
