HEREFORDSHIRE Council is rebranding its logo but councillors have been assured that the apple is being kept.

Cabinet councillors approved the the new communication strategy for 2016 to 2019, which provides the framework for communicating effectively with the public and how to "manage risk" when dealing with the media.

The meeting heard that the council logo will be adapted to make it more 'digital friendly.'

Cllr Sebastian Bowen said: "When I hear refresh or branding or branding refresh, that also reeks of expense to me. I hope it will be economical."

He added that he thought the council had a very good brand already and he wouldn't like to see the apple go.

Cllr David Harlow said: "I can assure you this has been done as efficiently as possible. With regards to the brand and the apple, without spoiling the surprise, we are currently working on a new website but it does include an apple."

Cllr Bob Matthews said he was assured to hear that councillors were not 'gagged' because of the policy and could still speak to the media, as long as they are responsible and make it clear they are not representing the council as a whole.

Cllr Patricia Morgan said: "Developing brands is very cost-effective. There are opportunities that can come from improving communication so people can really understand what they expect from the council and we can really understand how we can provide services better."
