A COUNCILLOR has been criticised for claiming that there has been an 'overreaction' to the Grenfell Tower fire.

Cllr Bruce Baker compared some of the reactions to the blaze with Corporal Jones's famous 'don't panic' line on the BBC sitcom Dad's Army.

His comments were described as 'disgraceful' at a Hereford and Worcester Fire Authority meeting yesterday (Monday).

Cllr Baker, who sits on Herefordshire Council, said: "What concerns me is it seems to be an overreaction to Grenfell.

"I'm not talking about an overreaction to the fire.

"It's some of the organisations and authorities throughout the country who suddenly have decided to do all these investigations.

"We need to be calm about this. It reminds me of Corporal Jones running around saying 'don't panic' when they really are."

Cllr Udall, who represents St John's on Worcester City Council, said: "I'm shocked such comments are still being made.

"It's not an overreaction when 79 people have died. It's about saving lives.

"I think it's quite disgraceful what we have just heard from a member of the Fire Authority.

"I have to say the comment made by the member that there's been an overreaction, I hope was misspoken.

"I hope the member that made that comment can reconsider his choosing of words."

Cllr Udall previously said after the London fire that he received calls from concerned residents who lived in the three tower blocks in St Clement's Close, Worcester.

Some were worried about the cladding on the buildings due to speculation that this played a role in the blaze.

But Fortis Living insist that the Worcester tower blocks do not have the same type of cladding as Grenfell Tower.

Some 79 people are presumed dead as a result of the fire on Wednesday, June 14.

Since the tragedy 60 high-rise buildings have failed cladding safety tests across the country.

Camden Council decided to evacuate tenants from some of the tower blocks in its area due to safety concerns.
