A COUNTY councillor has raised concerns about the council's choice of developer which has been selected to help build 800 homes in Hereford city centre.

Chairman of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Seb Bowen, said he wants to be sure that Keepmoat is the right choice to help Herefordshire Council deliver an urban village in the city.

Along with Independent county councillor, Bob Matthews, he has been left concerned by content on dedicated websites which criticise the developer.

Cllr Bowen said: "I think they [the council] have followed all of the right processes. But looking at all of the websites, it does give you pause of thought. I am considering a call-in.

"I have asked for and been promised a comprehensive summary on the developer."

Cllr Bowen also referred to Keepmoat's Barons Cross development and said he thought some of the bedrooms were very small.

He said: "More importantly is the actual monitoring of the contract and making sure they do live up to what they say they are doing."

A Herefordshire Council spokesman said: "Herefordshire Council has undertaken a rigorous procurement process to help deliver the council’s ambitious housing plans, with Keepmoat identified as the preferred bidder.

"For any contract award, the council carries out due diligence to ensure a company’s good standing and financial situation, which includes taking up relevant references."
