FAMILY members travelled from as far away as the USA to help celebrate the 100th birthday of a Hereford woman.

Joan Payne was born in the Binnersley family home in Manor Farm Road, Tyseley, Birmingham on August 17 1917.

She spent her life living in and around Birmingham and the Midlands until she moved to Hereford in 1997 to be closer to family.

She is a very independent character and still extremely fit and well – most days walking into Hereford city centre – and is currently planning on having a new bathroom fitted.

A telegram arrived from the Queen to congratulate her and last month she was visited by an officer from the Department for Work and Pensions who told her she is the first centenarian they have met who is not claiming extra care benefits, because she is so fit and able for her age.

The family had a party at Saxtys in Hereford and family members travelled from as far away as the United States of America to help her celebrate.
