A BROMYARD-based producer of chutneys is ending 2017 on a high after a year bursting with success.

Jane Raven set up Myrtle’s Kitchen in 2014 and now has a range of nine chutneys and one jam. This year she has been awarded a two star Great Taste Award for her Chuckleberry Jam and a one star Great Taste Award for her Christmas Chutney from the Guild of Fine Foods.

And things ramped up a gear when she scooped a prestigious BBC Good Food Producers’ Bursary to showcase her products to a much wider audience last week.

Selected from thousands of national food producers Jane’s passion for cooking secured her four days at the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC in Birmingham.

She said: "It was such good fun. The products were very well received so it was a really positive experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it."

Amongst the products that on show was the ‘Hereford Hedgerow’ chutney, a palate pleaser made from local pears and foraged blackberries.

Jane, who lives in Avenbury and cooks in Bromyard, was blown away to be one of six winners who had the chance to exhibit to celebrity chefs and thousands of food fans from across the country.

She said: "I applied for the bursary last year and they came back and said 'we love the product but you need to do something about your labelling'. So I did that and re-branded and it's quite exciting because it's got a real Herefordshire twist.

"The labels have a tiling effect and the tiles are from a company which was based at Mordiford."

Her newest chutney creation, The Runner – a seasonal special packed with local runner beans, was also on show.

Other flavours include: Mango Hot and Mango Original, Gardeners’ Chutney (tomato and nettle), Beetroot and Orange, Worcester Warrior and Brewers Chutney made from Leominster’s Swan Ale and medlar.

She said: "All the recipes are created by us. We think 'where is there a whole in our product range?' The Worcester Warrior, for example, was designed to go with meat and has mustard and a real depth of flavour.

"We start with what what it's going to accompany on the plate. Herefordshire Hedgerow is very much your cheese-board chutney so that's how it happens."

Myrtle's Kitchen products are stocked in specialist outlets across Herefordshire and Worcestershire and a new website has also recently been launched.
