Hundreds of people turned out in celebration of St George’s Day
3:10pm Sunday 29th April 2012 in Ledbury
HUNDREDS of people turned out for a day of celebrations in Malvern in honour of England’s patron saint.
Sunday’s events kicked off in Priory Park with poetry, music and a dramatisation of the story of St George and the dragon by pupils from Northleigh Primary School.
Uniformed groups and civic dignitaries then led a parade to Malvern Priory, where a service was held at 2.30pm.
Malvern’s mayor Ian Hopwood said he was delighted with the event, and paid tribute to late town councillor William Atkinson, who had proposed the town council organise St George’s celebrations before his death in July 2010, aged 63.
“It was William who brought this up and was extremely keen for it to happen, so the credit for its success has to go to him,” he said.
“I think it all went well and I am certain that it will now become an annual celebration.”
