Man smashed glass to take handbag from car

A MAN has been convicted of smashing the window of a car parked in a layby on a country road and stealing a handbag.

Christopher Morgan, aged 36, of Kempley Brook Drive, Ledbury, was remanded on bail at Worcester Crown Court for a pre-sentence report.

Morgan denied that he had taken the handbag, which was later found burnt in nearby woodland, on a pleasure drive through the country.

The prosecution alleged that fragments of glass found on the fleece jacket he was wearing could have come from the broken windscreen. But he said it could have come from scrapyards where he would often rummage about looking for parts for his car.

He maintained he had been working for a drinks firm in Ledbury before going out with a friend for a drive in his open-top Mazda sports car. He denied getting out of the car and stealing the bag.
