Good boy! Our Kai’s a top dog at the canine Olympics
10:00am Sunday 21st October 2012 in Ledbury
A LEDBURY dog has capped a remarkable year by finishing in the top 10 in a worldwide competition.
Canine star Kai, along with father and son owners Travis and Ashley Foster, are the most successful British working shepherd dog team in history after winning a top 10 place in the Protection Dog World Championships in Austria.
Kai secured seventh place against stiff competition and his performance smashed the previous British record.
Until this month, no British working German shepherd dog had come higher than 42nd in the championships.
Now Travis and Ashley, from Elmsdale Road, Ledbury, really have something to celebrate.
Ashley, aged 25, said: “In total, 146 of the highest qualified working German shepherd dogs and their handlers from 38 countries around the world came to Austria to compete in tracking, obedience and protection.”
“It’s the equivalent of the Olympics for working dogs, watched by an estimated crowd of 30,000 spectators and thousands more following the action live online over five days of intense competition.
“This was our first attempt at internationallevel dog sport, having qualified in first place for the British World Championship team last June and coming second in the 2011 British National Championships with the highest ever recorded obedience round.”
Travis, Ashley and Kai can be seen on the big screen in the recent summer blockbuster Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, where the father and son team play hoodlums.
Kai will be competing next at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern for the 2012 British National Championships today (Sunday).
