Trees to be removed

TREES and bushes on Malvern Link Common are to be removed to allow a railway fence to be replaced.

However, Malvern Hills Conservators have reassured residents that they will be allowed to grow back and that the work will be carried out during the winter months, so as not to interfere with the bird breeding season.

The greenery is being removed to allow Network Rail to replace and upgrade 310 metres of fence between Moorlands Road and Worcester Road.

Ageing 1.4-metre-high post-and-wire fencing will be replaced with a 1.8-metre-high ‘weldmesh’ fence.

Jenny Palmer, deputy conservation officer at Malvern Hills Conservators, said: “Although the fencing is not on our land, we’ve been working with the contractors to try to minimise damage to the common and to the trees while the work is undertaken.”

Are they planning to cut away the greenery on both sides of the railway line? There is a very lovely crab apple tree close to the fence on the western side, not far from Worcester Road. If this were cut back it would take decades for it to grow back, if it did. There are many trees and shrubs along the fence. I do hope that the contractors take on board the message to minimise the damage.
