GIVEN the constant stream of letters about the dubious and undemocratic behaviour of the Conservative-controlled Malvern Hills District Council, one has to ask at what point its leadership will arrive at the realisation that it is a public body, and is supposed to administer services and finances on behalf of all the residents of the Malvern Hills District, not only the council's leadership?

It transpires that during the last meeting of the council, attended by a significant number of constituents, the council leader, Mr Hughes, refused to discuss the application for planning consents he has submitted for 23 new houses to be built on land he owns.

Has Mr Hughes not heard of conflict of interest, or even public accountability?

Unless, and until Mr Hughes et al take responsibility for their actions thus far, and address the undemocratic and questionable behaviour of the council's leadership, the trust of the public in the council will continue to deteriorate, and their mandate will subsequently diminish further.
