I JUST loved your letters page last week (September 26).

The wonderful range of opinion, from some councillor who is of the view that anyone who has the temerity not to think as he does is beneath contempt, from two people who think all councillors are beneath contempt, from someone who thinks that we must not be contemptuous of inefficient wind turbines that will not consistently generate the electricity we need, and the one enlightened person who put his finger on what really threatens our beloved country.

Consider 8,000 new houses. Say 22,000 new residents. Say 12,000 cars. Look at the places that will irrevocably disappear. Consider possibly the demand for school places, doctors’ surgeries, consider if you will the pressure on utility services and supplies, and you have a scenario that is less than lovely. Then ask yourself why this is, and then remember that in May next year you have the chance to stop the rot.

In the meantime, long may the correspondence in your columns continue to entertain.
