THE plans for enormous industrial chicken cheds housing 200,000 wretched chickens at Chances Pitch between Ledbury and Colwall have been withdrawn following the damning representations from the area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and British Heritage.
The farmer, can, however, reapply in the future, causing the Colwall Action Group to restart their campaign to oppose the units, but from scratch.
The 600 or so mainly opposing letters offering much evidence on the Herefordshire Council planning website make interesting reading, while the very few supporting letters ignore the concerns of local people including odour, dust, pollution, heavy traffic along a dangerous stretch of road and through Ledbury at night, and the loss of jobs at the nearby Wellington Inn (which serves free-range, locally sourced food).
The number of jobs created on the plans is two!
The destruction of a huge area of agricultural land is likely to cause more flooding, and we know that the road at Chances Pitch is regularly closed after heavy rain now. Why give high protection to the landscape with an AONB status if development like this is considered ?
