IT would appear that many local candidates are waiting to see which way the wind is blowing before announcing their position on the proposed Malvern cable car.

Brian Smith (Gazette, February 6) is quite right to call on them to come out of the shadows and declare where they stand.

I have no hesitation in doing so. I believe that no monetary value can be placed on the unique splendour of our natural environment and on our diverse and historic built environment.

Whatever economic and social benefits are claimed for this proposal – and I remain to be convinced there are any – they are far outweighed by the environmental damage that would be done to our hills and the strain half a million additional visitors would place on our already creaking transport infrastructure.

This proposal can only damage Malvern and I shall do all that I can to prevent it going ahead.
