THE Malvern Hills cable car proposal is another money-grabbing, pocket-lining exercise to benefit a tiny group of mainly anonymous investors.

Citing disabled access, town centre rejuvenation and an educational programme on their website – circulated the day before their public meeting with the hills Conservators – has to be the most cynical, ill-informed ploy I’ve witnessed in a good long while.

We know perfectly well why Church Street is less busy than 15 years ago.

Promoter Roger Sutton says we should look for ‘a final solution’ to the group’s plans. A regrettable choice of expression, that.

I’ll give him a healthy solution. Pull your socks up, smell the coffee, leave your boardroom and enjoy the hills – accessible at a massive variety of points on surfaces hard and soft to suit all ages and ability and fitness levels – as thousands upon thousands of local residents and visitors do already.

Thankfully, law as well as the local community protects this area of outstanding national beauty from minority commercial interests as sordid as a cable car conglomeration.
