THE Malvern Hills Green Party recognises there is a real need to rejuvenate Malvern's local economy, and particularly its local centres.

The Green Party believes it is essential to protect and encourage local independent retailers.

To do this business conservation areas should be established by the local authority to (1) limit the incursion of formula retailers in key areas, (2) promote affordable rents and retail space, (3) establish clear priorities favouring environmentally friendly local business start-ups, (4) establish an attractive retail mix, (5) improve ready access by public transport, cycling or walking, and (6) which will prohibit any further out of town developments.

The Worcestershire-Herefordshire sub-region has many local growers, craftspeople, artists, entrepreneurs, knowledge workers and others waiting to develop their ideas who, when combined with existing amenities and facilities, such as the arts centre and the town's rail links, could with appropriate encouragement help re-establish Great Malvern's vitality.

With some well known national supermarket chains losing market share and sacking staff, the time is ripe for promoting local economic development, sustainability and a cultural distinctiveness that genuinely creates a pleasant and dynamic urban environment and that offers opportunities for green growth, green jobs and enhanced green spaces.
