AS a patient of Link End surgery for some 25 years I have good reason to be thankful for the care given to me by my doctors and the local hospitals.

During that time I have been treated for TB, a slow heart rate necessitating the fitting of a pacemaker, two plastic lenses in my eyes, and a steel plate holding one of my ankles together.

The surgery now has to deal with a five per cent increase in the number of registered patients in the last year.

No doubt this is reflected in all of the local GP surgeries and makes it more difficult for all of us to gain an appointment to see our doctor.

It becomes more important than ever that we should learn to rely on local pharmacies for remedies to cure the simpler ailments.

We should also hope that the new government after May 7 finally makes the effort to increase funding for the NHS to a more sensible level of 9 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), allowing our fantastic health service to avoid the imminent shortfall so well documented in the media of late.
