Thought for the Week

THE recent earthquake in Haiti caused terrible devastation with vast numbers killed and many seriously injured. Thousands have been left homeless and are having to camp in the open. Children have been orphaned and separated from their families.

The international community has responded with food, water, shelter, sanitation and medical aid. In this country, the Disaster Emergency Committee launched an immediate appeal and individuals, schools, churches and other groups have shown goodwill and generosity by making donations and organising events to raise money. The situation demands that we continue to support and pray for the people of Haiti in their sufferings.

It is heartening how in a major disaster we recognise our common humanity and respond to human need. We do not allow differences of nationality, race or religion to hinder our desire to help. Could we not always be as kind and sympathetic to the needs of others?

ANTHONY GANN, Malvern Churches’ Justice and Peace Group.
