A PAINTING of a Ledbury house by a famous British artist is to go under the hammer at an auction.

The painting, by Mary Adshead, will be sold at John Goodwin's Spring Fine Art and Collectable Sale at the Three Counties Showground, on Wednesday, March 15.

The image is of New Mills House, as it appeared in the 1950s or the 1960s, when Adshead used to visit.

It is believed that he house, at the time, belonged to the family of a friend.

Although not a household name, Adshead is a name to be conjured with, because she was well known as a painter, illustrator and muralist.

Indeed, Adshead painted a mural for the British Pavillion at the Parish Exhibition of 1937.

More recently, an exhibition of her work was held at the University of Liverpool's Art Gallery, in 2005.

She was born in Bloomsbury, London, in 1904 and died in 1995.

New Mills House still exists, off the Hereford Road, but today it is surrounded by more trees than was the case when Adshead used to visit.

The painting is expected to reach between £700 and £900 at auction.
