WHO hasn't dreamed of finding treasure under the bed?

For one lucky woman, that dream came true, and the large consignment of 18th century Worcester and Caughley porcelain she discovered is to be sold at Smiths Auction Rooms in Newent at their Antiques and Collectables Sale on Friday (April 7).

And there's even a connection with one of the best-loved experts to ever appear on the Antiques Roadshow.

A spokesman for Smiths said: "The owner recently re-discovered the collectable blue and white tea wares stored in three large boxes under the bed in her spare bedroom and re-calls that they were purchased by her father many many years ago from his friend Arthur Negus when her father ran a small antiques shop in Wimbledon.

"Arthur Negus must have been the very first ‘antiques celebrity and was famous for his appearances in Going For a Song 1965 to 1977 and then later the Antiques Road Show 1979-1983."

The spokesman added: "The collection is in generally in very good condition and includes a variety of wares such as teapots, tea cups, sugar bowls, tea canisters and even a rare small oval tureen. The decorative oriental inspired designs which were popular at that time are descriptively named and include The Fisherman and Cormorant, The Argument, The Bat Pattern and of course Pagoda and Willow Patterns."

Smiths sale starts at 10am on Friday April 7 with viewing on the day prior 9am-10am. The fully illustrated catalogue can be viewed at www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk
