A MASS brawl in Ledbury High Street was so loud it disrupted a Ledbury town council meeting for around 15 minutes, as councillors left the Market House to investigate.

One of the councillors who went out was the deputy mayor of Ledbury, Cllr Elaine Fieldhouse, who said the actual tussle, by the War Memorial and bus stop, involved about 15 people but there were more standing in the street.

She said: "We just walked out to observe and spoke to someone, a member of the public, who called the police. There were separate tussles going on and it was very noisy.

"It was noisy as there were girls pushing girls, and they were all dressed up. They were shoving each other about and screaming at each other."

Cllr Fieldhouse added: "I'm surmising that they had all just come back from the Cheltenham Races."

Another councillor at the town's environment and leisure committee was former mayor, Cllr Annette Crowe, who said that two men, who were brawling in the street, risked being run over by passing traffic.

She said: "I was terrified someone would be run over."

At least one car had to swerve around the two brawling men.

Cllr Crowe added: "People were shouting for it to stop, especially the ladies."

Cllr Crowe, who also called the police, had nothing but praise for Cllr Fieldhouse and Cllr Matthew Eakin, who approached the brawlers.

"It was brave of them," she said. "But I think it looked worse than it was."

Despite the disruption, there were no arrests.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called to High Street in Ledbury at around 8pm on Wednesday, March 16.

"It followed a report of anti-social behaviour involving a group of around 25 people."

The spokesman added: "Officers attended but no crime was reported or ruled to have taken place."
