LEDBURY senior citizens have been suffering from goal fever all winter, thanks to the town's first ever Over 50s Walking Football Club, which is going down a storm.

The team, The Ledbury Penguins, is one of just a handful of sides registered by Herefordshire Football Association.

But the lack of a league and opposition has done nothing to dampen enthusiasm.

Club spokesman, Bob Fletcher who, at 73, is the oldest player on the pitch, not including the referee, said: "We've played 19 games so far, starting in November; but we don't play against anyone.

"The players are quite happy to play among themselves, for a bit of fun, It's for the social aspect and for exercise really."

After games, the club members gather in The Talbot in New Street, to discuss the evening's play.

And the venture has already gained the attention of Talbot landlord, Andy ward who said: "I will be playing in the near future, it is amazing to watch lots of clever ball control and everyone trying not to run."

So far, the club has 24 signed-up players, including four ladies, who play alongside the men.

Usually games are nine or ten a side on the all weather pitch at the John Masefield High School.

Mr Fletcher played football at local level for many years, including at Dymock and Brockhampton;, but he said: "A lot of people have never played football before; but they love it."

And he described the club's female players as being "amazing" on the ball.

One of them is Upton councillor, Angela Conway, aged 68, who plays in defence.

Mr Fletcher said: "She's brilliant. A star player. None of the men can get past her."

For some players, it is a chance to continue old friendships.

Mr Fletcher said: "The ref, Ray Harris, is 73 and we went to school together, in Canon Frome, and we've been mates ever since."

The club meets at the Masefield High all weather pitch on Mondays, at 7.30pm.
