MORRIS dancers from across the country will fills the streets of Ledbury with colourful performances this St George's Day.

The Silurian Border Morris Men, from Ledbury, are hosting the event – referred to as a 'Black Meet' – on Sunday, April 23.

Ten teams from as far away as Preston have been invited to take part, and will dance through the streets performing routines from the Welsh Borders.

Keith Francis, of the Silurian Morris Men, said: "This event has been held throughout the area for several years, and Silurian are honoured to be hosting the event again.

"Silurian have been performing these dances for nearly 50 years. We had a similar gathering in Ledbury two years ago.

"It is often referred to as a ‘Black Meet’ as all the performers disguise themselves by painting their faces, usually black, and many wear quite elaborate costumes."

The event, which starts at the Market House at 11am, will begin with a cheque presentation to St Michael's Hospice.

The Silurians raised £800 at its Much Marcle Wassail in January and the sum has been matched by Weston’s Cider.

Helen Tomas, Deputy Lieutenant for Herefordshire, will be at the presentation, along with Ledbury's town crier.

Each team will then dance under the Market House, before splitting up to perform around the town at venues including the Master’s House, the Talbot Inn in New Street, and near the Brewery in Bye Street.

Morris 'side's attending are Alvechurch, Bakanalia, Beorma, Bowbrook, Foxes, Silhill, Stone the Crows, Styx of Stroud, Widders and Wychwood.
