EASTNOR Lodge Masons plan to debunk the myths about the organisation at an open day to mark the 300th anniversary of the United Grand Lodge of England.

Members of the local lodge say the "tools of the trade" and regalia will be on show, for the first time in more than half a century.

Spokesman David Sparrey said: “There has always been some mistrust and unease when people talk about the Masons, and of course the Dan Brown novels have added to the mystique. So these tercentenary celebrations provide the opportunity to be open and transparent about what we do. "Those present will explain Freemasonry history and how Ledbury Masons contribute to the local community."

Robed in full Mason’s Regalia and with other paraphernalia, the Ledbury Freemasons will mark the tercentenary by holding the first of a series of events upstairs in the Feathers hotel where the room is to be decorated "replicating a typical Lodge set up and reveal the symbolism in order to debunk the myths which have surrounded the organisation for many years".

Those present will explain Freemasonry history and how Ledbury Masons contribute to the local community.

Ten local organisations will be beneficiaries of the Mason's charitable giving and these will be announced on the day, Saturday June 24

In the afternoon a Service of Thanksgiving will be held in the Burgage Hall where the robed Eastnor Masons, led by the Standard Bearer carrying the Lodge Banner will process to the Hall.

Everyone will be welcome to attend.

The last time Freemason wore their regalia in public was 1958 when they celebrated with a Service in St Michael and All Angels Church, Ledbury.

Future plans include a Teddy Bears Picnic scheduled for later in the year.
