LEDBURY Cricket Club's new ground off Orlham Lane is already attracting some of the biggest names in cricket, and some of them have been known to arrive by bike.

The club was recently visited by representatives of the Professional Cricketers Association, who called at the club's ground on the fourth leg of their Big Bike Ride charity endeavour, to raise funds for the PCA Benevolent Fund and the Tom Maynard Trust.

This year's event, which put some of the top names in cricket in the saddle, is of special significance because 2017 is the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s 50th anniversary.

A Legacy Year Appeal has been launched to raise an extra £250,000 for the PCA Benevolent Fund.

A Ledbury cricket club spokesman said: "After starting at Worcestershire's New Road the riders arrived in Ledbury at 11am and were greeted by a guard of honour formed by pupils from Ledbury Primary School.

"Club members were delighted to meet amongst others Marcus Trescothick, Tim Bresnan and 2005 Ashes hero Geraint Jones who actually recalled playing at Ledbury's old ground many years ago."

The spokesman added: "Former England opening batsmen Graeme Fowler led the support group whilst amongst the other riders were Worcestershire's Daryl Mitchell, Oliver Hannon Dalby of Warwickshire and ex county players David Fulton and Alan Fordham.

"After tucking into bacon rolls and the vast array of cakes laid on by the club the riders presented club Vice Chairman Stuart Evans and chief organiser Matt Ehrlich with a signed bat, certificate and plaque to mark the occasion."

The seventy riders then set off for the next part of their journey to The Forest of Dean before finishing in Monmouth.
