POLICE have dismissed claims that 69 per cent of fixed speed cameras in the West Mercia region are switched off.

On Monday, the Press Association (PA) published the results of Freedom of Information requests to police forces across the UK.

PA said that 18 of 26 – or 69 per cent – fixed speed cameras in West Mercia were turned off, however a spokesman for the force's Safer Roads Partnership said this was not true.

She said the force has 19 cameras that are moved across 27 fixed sites.

These 27 sites are simply the boxes that house the cameras.

"Some sites are used more than others and some are currently undergoing a modernisation programme to move over to digital technology," the spokesman said.

"For operational reasons, we wouldn’t release where our cameras are for each day."
