Cyclists' stop area warmly welcomed

4:17pm Thursday 24th July 2008

LEDBURY Cycle Forum has welcomed the introduction of a special “stop area” for cyclists in the High Street, located on the approach to Top Cross.

Only cyclists can stop in the new red-coloured area, ahead of all other traffic, thanks to a feeder lane.

This gives cyclists a head start on motorists and keeps them away from traffic fumes.

Cycle Forum spokesman, Steve Glennie-Smith said the new stop area was something that the Forum had been demanding for around five years.

He welcomed the fact that Herefordshire Council had installed it.

Now the forum will campaign for a contra-flow system in New Street.

Mr Glennie-Smith said: “Basically, it would allow cyclists to go one way against the traffic.”

Cyclists in the red stop area in the High Street would be able to then make a right turn at Top Cross into New Street, which is currently one way for all traffic from the junction to beyond the Talbot Hotel.
