Students celebrate record A-levels

STUDENTS and teachers at John Masefield High School are celebrating another record year for A-level results.

The sixth-formers achieved the highest-ever proportion of A-grades at the school, with 26 per cent of 160 entries achieving A-grades.

The average result at the school was an impressive one A grade and two B grades.

The overall pass rate was 98 per cent and the pass rate was 100 per cent in biology, business studies, chemistry, dance, design technology, drama, English language, English literature, fine art, French, further maths, general studies, geography, German, history, music technology, physical education, physics, psychology and textiles.

The highest-ever proportion of students at the school, 78 per cent, achieved A, B, or C grades.

Head Andy Evans said: “Science results were again excellent, with a total of 17 A-grades in science subjects, and all 14 of the candidates taking A-level psychology achieved A, B, or C grades.

“Our sixth-formers achieved extremely well to narrowly beat last year’s record results. After last year we thought, can we improve? I’m delighted.

“As well as gaining excellent academic qualifications, our students go on to university or employment as mature, confident and articulate young people.

“There were some very good students indeed this year. I would like to congratulate our sixth formers on the excellent contribution they made to our school and to thank the staff who helped them to achieve so well.”

Notably successful candidates included Rosie Allen who achieved four straight A grades in French, maths, further maths and physics; Marie Gardner, who gained A grades in biology, French and psychology, and Matthew Jones, with A grades in biology, chemistry and physics.

Alex Skittery also achieved three straight A grades, in chemistry, maths and physics.

The school has further successes to celebrate this year, with more able younger students, in the fifth form, being encouraged to try their hand at some AS-levels one year early .

Mr Evans said: “Fifteen able mathematicians and 20 English students took AS levels.

“They achieved excellent results with six A-level grades in maths and five A-grades and seven B grades in English.”
