THE resurfacing of Newent town centre is set to start in the New Year.

The Forest of Dean District Council has announced a number of measures including the re-paving of Market Square with stone slabs.

The High Street will be resurfaced, as will Broad Street and Church Street.

Pavement widths will be increased, where possible, and parking arrangements in the market town will come under review.

The authority has applied for a £500,000 grant from the South West Regional Development Agency, and it has already earmarked £240,000 of its own money for the work.

The council hopes that planning gain windfalls from developers will also help fund the ambitious scheme.
